Martha Naranjo Sandoval

"I find the idea of hope slipping through my fingers these days."

Martha Naranjo Sandoval's work focuses on the materiality of image; in the difference between how time is portrayed in moving and still images; and in how images gain significance culturally.
She makes stereoscopic collages, light installations, multimedia installations, slideshows, and books. She works with different mediums using obsolete technology designed to remember.

Is love more than simple chemistry?
Love is such an elusive concept. I catch myself looking at my cat and wondering if she loves me, can she even love?  We want to think that we are more than our fleshy bodies, but it’s hard to think that anything that happens inside our brain is more than electricity traveling through neurons.

Are you shy?
I am shy. But I also am bold and audacious. I am and am not a lot of things. When I am making a silly dance for my husband in the middle of the street, which happens a lot and out of the blue, I sometimes think about how I am only that way when I am with him or with my younger sister. They are my favorite people to perform absurdity to. I make up simple songs about crossing the street, kiss watermelons in the supermarket, point at stray cats excitedly. Often times people stare at me while I do this; I notice but don’t stop.

Soy y no soy muchas cosas.

Is there a part of you that is cruel?
There is a part of me that is selfish, and that can lead to unintentional cruelty. There is a part of me that wants to pick up and hold my cat even though I know this is not comfortable for her, that wants to wake up early and wakes up my husband before he wants to, that wants the construction in front of my apartment window to fail and stop work.

A planet that you would like to visit (real or imaginary)
I’d like to be more able to travel across this one. I feel like I am always making excuses as to why I can’t travel more:“I have to wait for my traveling permit to arrive,” “I don’t have money,” “I don’t have time.”

What does the color red make you feel?
I remember an oversized red cardigan my mother wore when I was young. It had cable-knit patterns on the body and sleeves, mustard trimmings, and golden crest buttons. She wore it with the sleeves rolled-up. I always thought it was the most stylish piece of clothing and I tried, unsuccessfully, to wear it in college. Last time I was home I asked her for it and she took it out, some of the knit had unraveled leaving hanging threads. I wonder why my mom still keeps it even though it’s now unwearable.

If you could be a food ingredient what would you be and why?
The answer to this question depends on where I am. If you ask me while I am in Mexico, I would like to think of myself as eggs: sometimes they are there for flavor, something they serve a function; they turn into so many textures and tastes, it is not easy to say where they fit in because you can have them in breakfast, main dishes, desserts and even drinks; they can be the featured player or just a small part of the team; they are also not everyone’s favorite. But if I am in the United States I find myself wandering back home and feeling closer to it, it’s suddenly very important for me that I was made of maize by Xmukane. I find myself thinking of ingredients with Mesoamerican names, of avocado and chipotle, of nopal and piloncillo.

What personal demons does your work reveal?
I often wonder how much my work brings to the table, and that reveals the hard truth that I need to trust that I am able and worth it.

What is the most hopeful word in any language?
I find the idea of hope slipping through my fingers these days.
If you translate the word “hope” into Spanish it is “esperanza”, which doesn’t really mean the same. Esperanza is a word in between “espera” and “añoranza”: espera is wait, añoranza is yearning. It is something between wishing for the best outcome and the act of hanging in there until it happens. Lately I’ve been frustrated with how passive hoping is, but also exasperated at how small I am to affect change. Is that what losing hope is?

And the most dangerous?
My brain short circuits when I try to think of universals so I have a hard time coming up with anything that is the most.It is true that language can be so dangerous, though. It is such a colloquial tool that we not often stop to think about what we are really saying when we say things.

Vertical or horizontal.
Film is almost always horizontal. Maybe because is what best approximates what our eyes see. Vertical has a bad reputation. People don’t like when you record vertical videos. But the world expands in an almost unnatural way in vertical images. I like them, I take a lot of them. They feel more like a slice of what is in front of me.

¿Vertical u Horizontal?
Me gustan, tomo muchas.

If you could be anything, what would you want most to be?
It is very easy to wonder what one could be or do in different circumstances, but when you start to think about it more the idea unravels like pulling a stocking thread. If am I something other than me, can I even be myself anymore?

What shocks you? If anything?
I’m shocked by how easily we get used to things not being the best they could be.

Suppose you were drowning. What images, in the classic tradition, do you envision crossing across your mind?
Growing up my room had a wooden loft. I once fell from it on to my bed. As I was falling I saw myself in slow motion. The bed closed in on me slowly and I saw my extremities flailing trying to grasp something, as if I was a gibbon falling from a tree. No other images were conjured in my imagination, just what was happening. I kept thinking “Is this the mistake puts the final nail in the coffin? Is this what finally gets me? Is this an irreversible action that defines my life going forward?”

What are your political interests?
At this point is hard to think of myself outside of my political interests. Can one even afford not to?

What  is mystery for Martha Naranjo Sandoval?
This question is begging for a clever answer. I keep thinking of Jean Parvulesco in Breathless answering the question “What is your biggest ambition in life?” with “To achieve immortality, and die.” But all I can think is about a guy who once told me I was sexier when I wasn’t mysterious.

I’d say, we all think we know where all our bodies are buried so we don’t think of ourselves as a source for mystery. When I watched Force Majeure, about a father that when faced with impending doom decided to save himself instead of protecting his family, I kept wondering what I would do, dreading the worst. But when my cat got caught in a fishing line and turned erratic and aggressive shaking, swatting, biting, and scratching uncontrollably, I thought she was going to choke herself to death, and I found myself acting impulsively, crying and fighting, throwing myself at her to try to help her despite being scratched to bits.
