Peggy Anderson

US/SE

Peggy Anderson is a photographer based in New York and Sweden. Currently she is living with her family in Paris. Peggy graduated from The International Center of Photography (ICP) one-year General Studies in Photography certificate program in 2013.  Since then she has been pursuing various personal photography projects.  Her most recent project, Subway Readers, was exhibited in the 2016 “Autumn Salon” at Fotografiska in Stockholm. This is a portrait series of people reading books on the New York City subways. Her book, Subway Readers, was published at the same time. Peggy’s work often embraces ritual and typology.  While not necessarily a portrait photographer, she finds herself drawn to photographing people both for the challenge and interaction. Currently, Peggy is also enrolled in the one-year photography workshop, Altelier Smedsby, with JH Engstrom and Margot Wallard.

Me gusta encontrar pequeños tableaux vivants.

#subwayreaders

What started as an Instagram series three years ago eventually became a ritual on my daily subway commute in New York City. I am interested in the moment where public intersects private. What happens to a person while they are absorbed in their book in very public and often crowded space?  And what does their body posture or facial expression tell us?  I like finding little tableaux.  What is happening around the reader? I take these photos “undercover” because I don’t want the subjects to know they are being photographed. This helps preserve the naturalness of the setting and more importantly, it protects the intimacy of the moment.
